The particular advantage of a HEPA filter over conventional coarse and fine filters is that particles do not necessarily have to get trapped in the filter fibers. Even contact with the filter material can be enough to effectively remove particles from the air. This is made possible by physical processes such as adhesion and autoadhesion and ensures exceptionally high filter performance.

How a HEPA filter works

• The airflow containing dust particles of various sizes – from 10 micrometers and smaller – enters the filter.

• Larger particles are separated from the airflow due to their inertia, while smaller particles are captured through the diffusion effect.

• All particles that leave the airflow and come into contact with a filter fiber are retained on the filter material.

• The separated particles adhere permanently to the fibers and are securely bound by molecular attraction forces (van der Waals forces).
